Standing at a vantage point overlooking the vast expanse of Sanhe Village, General Secretary Xi Jinping inquired about the latest developments in "Cliff Village." This village, situated not far from Sanhe Village, was geographically close and shared similar poverty levels. It held a special place in General Secretary Xi's heart.
Zike Lage updated General Secretary Xi on the progress and transformations in "Cliff Village."
In the context of poverty alleviation efforts in Daliangshan, "Cliff Village" was akin to the wax-covered pass in the Long March—an infamous and highly challenging poverty stronghold.
"Cliff Village" had long been a place that required no introduction, yet its original name—Atuleer Village—was slowly fading from memory. Almost overnight, "Cliff Village" had become synonymous with Atuleer Village.
Atuleer Village is a natural village in Zhiermo Township, Zhaojue County, Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It lies 72 kilometres from the county town and comprises over 100 households with a population exceeding 480. The village comprises four farming and herding service cooperatives: Niujue Community, Tetu Community, Leer Community, and Guquluo Community. Nestled in a valley with altitudes ranging from 628 meters to 2,300 meters, the village was once accessible only by descending an 800-meter cliff and navigating 12 segments of 218 rattan ladders, earning it the moniker "Cliff Village."
Observe the rattan ladder that seems to ascend into the clouds, with children sporadically climbing it. Their journey to school is remarkably arduous.
Look at the little girl scaling the rattan ladder, her face flushed and her black hair drenched in sweat. She might be tired, and her backpack feels heavier with each step. Yet, she refuses to give up—her black eyes are filled with determination. One can believe that she will persist until she reaches her goal.
In the future, she will soar from here.
The students of Leer Primary School have moved beyond my childhood experiences. I saw a five-story teaching building and a cement-paved playground when I entered their campus.
From a distance, the tall teaching building appeared spectacular against Niujue Community residents' backdrop. This is a primary school for the Yi ethnic group that stands resilient against the elements, with its simple, angular architecture embodying a commitment to making education a lasting endeavour.
This scene takes me back to "yesterday." It was also noon, and the students were hungry. Some took out cold and hard corn cakes, while others ate half-cooked potatoes directly. They drank by cupping their hands and sipping from mountain springs. In winter, the children's hands, ears, and even faces were covered with frostbite, which was itching and painful. Looking at their thin, tattered clothes and yellow rubber shoes with toes peeking out, it was genuinely challenging for such children to continue attending school!
"You can see it from a plane with our shiny' heavenly ladder!"
"With the sightseeing cable car over the Grand Canyon. The cable is so long, spanning the Meigu River, it's easy to spot!"
"With the green olive groves and the cattle and sheep scattered across the mountains..."
"With the national flag, our national flag is the brightest and most eye-catching; you can see it from the sky!"
"Yes, with the national flag, with the national flag!"
"From the air, the national flag is the most prominent symbol of our school."
On that memorable day, after over 20 students from Leer Primary School completed their recording session at CCTV, they gathered at Tiananmen Square to witness the flag-raising ceremony. The early morning sky was adorned with the hues of dawn, and Tiananmen Square was already teeming with people. As the solemn national anthem played, the five-star red flag ascended slowly. The children from Zhaojue County in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, gazed up at the flag and saluted in unison as Young Pioneers.
I watched the video captured by their teacher repeatedly. In the bright eyes of these children from the heart of Daliangshan, I saw the glow of dawn, the promise of the future, and a beacon of hope.
I firmly believe that on the path to prosperity, no ethnic group, family, or individual will be left behind!
At this moment, the sky is clear and blue. High above, flies are circling. Under the gentle mountain breeze, the five-star red flag flutters gracefully.
