Sunshine Overflows in the Awa Mountains

English Translation

Nestled on the southwestern frontier of our country, Banhong is situated in the heart of the Nanrunhe National Nature Reserve. This region is enveloped by lush, untouched jungles, presenting a picturesque blend of blue skies and verdant landscapes throughout the year. Bathed in sunshine and blessed with a pleasant climate, it is here that the Wa people have established their villages, flourishing along the banks of the Nanrun River. This enchanting land is home to the solemn Banhong Anti-British Monument, the Banhong Anti-British Memorial Hall, and the ancient banyan tree that stood witness to the oath of resistance made by seventeen Wa tribal chiefs against foreign invasion. Like precious gems, these historic sites captivate visitors with their radiant and mystical allure, drawing them into the depths of history to relive the era of conflict and patriotism. In 2021, ten veteran village secretaries from the border villages of Cangyuan County penned a collective letter to Xi Jinping, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, President of the People's Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, detailing the monumental transformations in the Wa Mountains. This letter received a personal response from Xi Jinping himself.

August 20, 2021, marked a triumphant day for the diverse ethnic groups of the Wa Mountains, a day destined to be remembered for generations. At Xiabanba in Banhong Village, the old village secretaries gathered to read Xi Jinping's reply. They recounted that the day began with a gloomy sky, heavy with dark clouds. Yet, as the letter was opened and read aloud, the sun pierced through the clouds, casting a golden glow upon the earth, and the weather turned bright and sunny. The assembled crowd erupted in cheers and celebrations. In his letter, the General Secretary wrote:

"Dear old village secretaries from the border villages of Cangyuan County in Yunnan Province:

Hello! Upon reading your letter, I have come to understand the significant changes brought about by poverty alleviation in the Wa Mountains and felt the deep affection the Wa people have for the Party and the country. I am happy.

As long-serving village secretaries who have worked and lived in border areas, you understand even more the significance of prosperity for border residents and stability for border areas. Poverty alleviation is an essential step towards a happy life. We must continue to focus on rural revitalization, prosperity for border areas and the people, and promote shared prosperity for all ethnic groups and prosperity and stability for border areas. I hope you will continue to play a model and leading role, guiding the villagers to always listen to and follow the Party, building a beautiful homeland, maintaining ethnic unity, protecting the sacred homeland, and singing the happy song of the Wa people in the new era.

Please extend my greetings to the villagers!"

The old village secretary, Sai Jin, replied radiantly, "On that day, we old village secretaries were profoundly moved. President Xi Jinping's reply gave us tremendous encouragement, and we were excited as we passed the letter around."

The letter was completed in mid-June 2021, and the old village secretaries never expected such a prompt and personal response from the General Secretary. The warmth and sincerity of his words filled them with immense joy. After submitting the letter, they were filled with both hope and anxiety, often lying awake at night, longing for a reply yet fearing it might never come. The General Secretary from Beijing learned about the dramatic changes in the Wa Mountains and the deep affection the Wa people hold for the country and the Party, fulfilling the wishes of the old village secretaries. If their feelings were to be symbolized by a tangible object, it would be the sound of wooden drums echoing through the valleys and clouds.

Upon receiving the significant reply, the various ethnic groups in the villages and hamlets of the Wa Mountains burst into the joyful melody of "The Song of the Happiness of the Wa People," composed by the Wa musician Cha Hongming. They welcomed visitors with the vibrant Wa hair-swinging square dance, showcasing the happiness of the Wa Mountain people. "The General Secretary's reply reached the Wa Mountains, making the mountains smile, the waters gleam, and the clouds dance. The beat of the wooden drums spread the sentiment, and the spring breeze rejuvenated the ancient border villages. The General Secretary's guidance is in our hearts; we share a common goal of homeland defence: ensuring stability. Rural revitalization enriches border areas, and ethnic unity brings prosperity..." This joyful and sweet song, akin to the warm sunshine enveloping the Wa Mountains, frequently echoes in the dance grounds of every village and hamlet.

After the Water Splashing Festival, the sky remained azure, and the earth verdant. In Xiabanba village of Banhong Township, I met our beloved Secretary Sai Jin in a car returning from the scenic overlook on Xiabanba. His contented smile was as soothing as a gentle spring breeze. He leaned out the car window to greet me and cheerfully remarked, "Xiabanba is now beautiful, with green mountains, blooming flowers, and sweet honey."

As anticipated by the people, Xiabanba has now become a national AAAA-level scenic spot. Houses with red tiles and white walls are constructed along the hillside, neatly arranged on the slopes by the Nangun River, nestled amidst green mountains and trees. The village's stone walls are adorned with flowering vines, and the blossoms are abundant and dazzling. Pumpkins and winter melons are stacked at the base of the walls, and golden corn hangs in the yards, symbolizing the harvest and joy of the Xiabanba people. Every household, front and back, is bountiful with fruits and vegetables, making the entire village picturesque and beautiful. I felt invigorated and rejuvenated in such a charming and joyful village.

A red tourism attraction named "Letter Reply Square" has been established here. A stone monument engraved with the contents of President Xi Jinping's reply letter, with bright red characters, is particularly striking. Behind the memorial are a honey processing and packaging room and a guest reception room. Over the past two years, integrating the beekeeping industry with tourism has significantly boosted the local economy. Xiabanba boasts a large shopping mall selling Wa Mountain specialities such as Giant Dragon bamboo crafts, mountain wood ears, dried bamboo shoots, traditionally brewed brown sugar, and organic honey. The honey here is categorized by colour: black honey and yellow honey. Bees collect different nectar in different seasons, resulting in varying honey colours. Black honey comes from millet flower nectar, while yellow honey is derived from other flowers. Each drop of honey is infused with a floral aroma.

Xiabanba is situated in the core area of the Nangun River National Nature Reserve. Since the expansion of the reserve, part of Xiabanba's farmland has become protected territory, increasing the habitat for elephants and other large animals. Consequently, the areas for tea and grain cultivation in Xiabanba have diminished. However, through tourism projects, the people of Xiabanba have offset their "losses," turning adversity into opportunity. The residents can now work within their village, selling green and ecological mountain products such as bananas, papayas, tea leaves, sweet glutinous rice cakes wrapped in leaves, and vine-based cough herbs, earning a livelihood without leaving their homes. Life in Xiabanba is steadily improving, akin to being sweetened with honey.

Xiabanba offers an ideal vantage point to appreciate the natural splendour of Washan Mountain and the scenic beauty of the Nangun River National Nature Reserve. From the glass walkway beneath the village, one can admire the mountains that stretch endlessly into the distance. The verdant forests of Banhong and Banlao spread out before you, showcasing the rich biodiversity and majestic allure of the untouched Nangun River National Nature Reserve. In the spring, if fortunate, one might even glimpse Asian elephants emerging from the dense foliage.
