Dunhuang's Mogao Caves hold 1,600 years of Buddhist art; Crescent Spring nestled in Mingsha Dunes has never dried; Zhangye's Danxia is a rainbow mountain left behind by the gods. The Yellow River flows through Lanzhou, where a bowl of beef noodles warms the city from 4 AM. Gansu is also a must-pass on China's longest expressway (Lianhuo) — its scenery is best experienced on the road.
